Optical Properties of Inorganic Suspended Solids and Their Influence on Coastal Ocean Color Remote Sensing

چکیده

S The influence of the optical properties of inorganic suspended solids (ISS) on in-water algorithms was evaluated using an optical model in highly turbid coastal water, whose ISS concentration reached several hundred grams per cubic metre. The measurements were conducted in the upper Gulf of Thailand. The backscattering coefficient of the ISS was calculated using the Lorenz–Mie scattering theory. On the basis of the measurement, the ISS size distribution was parameterised as a function of ISS concentration, and both the spherical and non-spherical particle shape models were evaluated. For ISS concentrations of 10 g m, an estimate of the chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration within a factor of two on a logarithmic scale is possible in a Chl-a range of 4–30 mg m. * Corresponding author.

Optical Properties Of Mineral Particles And Their Effect On Remote-Sensing Reflectance In Coastal Waters

(i) understand the magnitudes and variability of the optical properties of the ocean; (ii) predict the inherent and apparent optical properties of the ocean, including remote-sensing reflectance, given the types and concentration of suspended particles; (iii) retrieve the inherent optical properties and concentration of optically significant constituents of sea water from reflectance measurements.

Optical Models for Remote Sensing of Colored Dissolved Organic Matter Absorption and Salinity in New England, Middle Atlantic and Gulf Coast Estuaries USA

Ocean color algorithms have been successfully developed to estimate chlorophyll a and total suspended solids concentrations in coastal and estuarine waters but few have been created to estimate light absorption due to colored dissolved inorganic matter (CDOM) and salinity from the spectral signatures of these waters. In this study, we used remotely sensed reflectances in the red and blue-green ...

Remote Sensing of Particle Cross-Sectional Area in the Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea: Algorithm Development and Application Implications

Suspended particles in waters play an important role in determination of optical properties and ocean color remote sensing. To link suspended particles to their optical properties and thereby remote sensing reflectance (Rrs(λ)), cross-sectional area is a key factor. Till now, there is still a lack of methodologies for derivation of the particle cross-sectional area concentration (AC) from satel...

Remote Sensing of Tidal Situation by Monitoring Changes in Suspended Sediment Concentration in Surface Waters

Collecting information on suspended sediments concentration (SSC) in coastal waters and estuaries is vital for proper management of coastal environments. Traditionally, SSC used to be measured by time consuming and costly point measurements. This method allows the accurate measurement of SSC only for a point in space and time. Remote sensing from air-borne and space-borne sensors have proved to...

Optical assessment of particle size and composition in the Santa Barbara Channel, California.

The suspended particle assemblage in complex coastal waters is a mixture of living phytoplankton, other autochthonous matter, and materials of terrestrial origin. The characterization of suspended particles is important for understanding regional primary productivity and rates of carbon sequestration, the fate of anthropogenic materials released to the coastal environment, as well as its effect...
